Mathex Competition!

Two weeks ago on Wednesday night  it was Mathex.  Mathex is when your in a team of four and your team participates in a competition where they have to  do math problem solving.

I was lucky enough to be picked to go to Mathex! Fordell sent one year 5 team, two year 6 teams, one year 7 team and one year 8 team.

All of the teams did very well and the results were:  The Fordell year 5 team won the competition, the year 6 team came second and so did the year 7 team and the year 8 team did very well but didn't get a place. Overall I think Fordell School did fantastic in Mathex!

My Speech

Everyone has a place in the World.

This is my place Aoteara New Zealand.
My place is made up of two main islands
that lie in the South Pacific Ocean.
My place is a country of stunning  natural beauty. From rolling farmland,
mountains, trout filled lakes, beautiful
beaches and active volcanoes.
What makes my place so special.
Its people like you and me.
We have a population of 4.4 million
friendly and interesting people.
From the top of the North Island to
the bottom of the South Island
my place has plenty to see and do:

Auckland the city of sails has the Sky Tower.
Rotorua  famous Maori culture
and beautiful hot pools.
Wellington the windy city,
Parliament, Beehive
and Te Papa Museum.

Christchurch Botanic gardens
and parks.
Queenstown the adrenalin and adventure
capital of my place. You can ski, jet boat,
bungy jump and  skydive.
Dunedin with its wonderful tramping
tracks.

My place has its own kiwana:
Hockey pokey ice cream, fishnchips,
watties tomato sauce, gumboots,
jandals, kiwifruit, marmite
and the pav.

Did you know that new Zealand is one
of the safest countries in the world to live in.
Here’s a little bit of famous history in
my place.

Dutch Sailor Abel Tasman becomes the
first European to reach my place
New Zealand in 1642.

1840 The Maori sign the Treaty of Waitangi.
Sir Edmund Hillary becomes the first person
to climb to the top of Mt Everest in 1953.
In 2011 the Rugby World Cup was held
in my place and won by the All Blacks.

My place produces wool, sheep & beef,
dairy products, grapes, kiwifruit, wheat
and much much more.

New Zealand is one of the world’s least
crowded countries.

I think I am very lucky to be living
 in my place New Zealand.

Cross Country!!!

Yesterday, on Tuesday, it was the Fordell School cross country. We had been practicing and practicing for it!

The first race was the year 1s then the year 2s and so on. Before each race Cath Cranstone did some stretches and helped everyone warm up.

It was a house competition  so everyone was wearing their house colours and a sticker, I had a blue sticker because I'm in TAWA!!!

Finally the year 6 race had come, before I knew it we were off. We had to do 2 small laps then a big lap then a final small lap. I came 5th out of the year 6 girls and had lots of fun.

Everyone ran their best for their house and had heaps of fun.

The end results were: Miro in 3rd ,Tawa in 2nd and Kowhai in 1st.

Well done Kowhai!!!

The Bee!!! By Renee

It's black and yellow and can fly, can you guess what I'm talking about? Its the bee it may sound boring but its the most magnificent insect that I've ever seen.

Firstly because the bee works very hard to fly because its wings are so small compared to its body size. The bee flaps its wings so fast and so hard and fast that it makes a buzzing noise. Its also very interesting because the bee can fly faster than most people on earth can run.

Secondly I'd like to tell you about the different types of bees that there are in the world. There are honey bees, bumble bees, drone male bees, female queen bees and working bees, hornets and wasps. a lot of bees!

Lastly I want to talk about what bees eat. Bees eat nectar and gather pollen to feed their young, bees also make honey.

So that is why the bee is so fascinating to me!

Hockey!!! By Renee

On Wednesday, this week, the Fordell sticks are playing their final hockey game. We are playing at the Gonville hockey turfs at 3.30.  The team will be playing for 4th and 5th against
St Georges. We have beaten St Georges once before and have lost to them once.

I am sure that we can beat them and get 4th place!

Go the Fordell hockey team!
